I really have to say, for fun places to see, Virginia is full of surprises! If you’re like me and enjoy discovering, you’ll be thrilled with all the incredible spots this state will offer you. The famous cities of Virginia are just PERFECT for a super quick getaway, and lucky for us, there are lots to choose from! I’ve been able to see quite a few of these places myself, and I wanna give you my very personal insights. For a great day trip or a nearby fun spot, read on. You’re in for a real treat.
When I first started visiting some of Virginia’s most famous cities, I’d no idea how DIVERSE and interesting they’d be. Every city has its own UNIQUE charm, and no matter if you’re a history buff, a self lover or a foodie like me, each one has something different. You can walk down some old colonial streets, hike right through some really BEAUTIFUL mountains, or even visit ranches. The absolute best part is that you don’t have to travel super far to experience all this. If you enjoy both the excitement of big cities and the quiet of country escapes, Virginia has everything for you.
Richmon
One of my absolute favorite cities is Richmond, the capital of Virginia. Richmond has a RICH history, and I enjoy visiting its museums. Taking a walk down Monument Avenue is almost like stepping back in time itself. The city also gives the most WONDERFUL places to eat and shop, too, which makes it simply the perfect day trip or weekend getaway. You’ll see all sorts of things from modern art galleries to some of the most CHARMING old communes. Richmond’s rich culture and warm hospitality make me feel right at home.
Alexandria
Another truly fantastic city in Virginia is Alexandria. Just that short drive from Washington, D. C., Alexandria is famous for its cobblestone streets and that old-time charm, and also that attractive waterfront! Every time I visit, I fall in love with the small-town feel and its proximity to the big city.
Charlottesville
Virginia offers the most AMAZING day trips right close by. When I need that break from the city, a quick trip in VA will give me a fresh new perspective. There are just so many really great places to visit, and I’d like to tell you about a few of my own personal favorites.
Why don’t we start with Charlottesville? This city is really famous because it’s the home of the University of Virginia, but it’s way more than that to offer. I genuinely love that beautifully designed campus – especially when the leaves change color in the fall. The town has some great shops and cafes, and also some of the finest wineries that I’ve ever visited. Every single time I find my way to Charlottesville, I genuinely feel like I’m discovering something new and so excitingly different.
So if you love nature, then Shenandoah National Park is one of the best places to go for a day trip. It’s just not that far from me, and I’ve spent a lot of my weekends hiking right through the park’s many signs. The views themselves are truly breathtaking – especially from Skyline Drive itself. I’ve never regretted the trip there, no matter the season. Shenandoah National Park is a place I’ll always recommend to nature lovers.
Virginia Beach
For that genuine coastal escape, Virginia Beach is perfect. A short drive from Richmond, Virginia Beach offers boardwalk walks and beach fun. The ocean breeze, the sound of the waves themselves, and that constant, endless horizon make me feel at ease every single time I go there. And besides, the Virginia Beach area has tons of great restaurants and shops too, making it a truly wonderful place to spend a whole day or even a whole weekend.
Occasionally, I just wanna go on a really quick trip, but I don’t have the urge to travel that far. Luckily, there are loads of places just a little bit closer to Virginia that are just as interesting. I genuinely love nearby cities and towns, and you’ll always.
